Caring in Sports

A key component of good sportsmanship is caring about one’s teammates and even opponents, and readers will see many real-world examples of this on display in this installment in the Sports Build Character series (8 titles). The first chapter defines caring, emphasizing how it can be shown through encouragement and respect. Chapter two provides examples of well-known athletes putting others’ well-being or safety above winning. Among these are Olympic runners Abby D’Agostino and Nikki Hamblin, who collided but showed solidarity by finishing their race together, ultimately receiving the Fair Play Award. The final chapter offers reader-directed suggestions on how to be caring athletes in their own right. “Let’s Discuss” boxes pose questions to the reader that personalize the concepts in the text, and a concluding quiz reviews the overall content. —Julia Smith
